The first Slavic state-like conglomerate in the territory of Slovakia was the Empire of Samo founded in 7th century. Later, in 833 Principality of Nitra and of Moravia merged into Great Moravia. From late 10th century to the end of 11th century the territory of Slovakia was gradually affiliated to the Kingdom of Hungary.

After the breakup of Austro-Hungarian Empire, Slovakia became a part of Czecho-Slovak Republic (1918 – 1993). Independent Slovak Repbulic was founded on 1st January 1993 after the split of Czecho-Slovakia. Slovak Republic is a parliamentary democracy.
